South China Sea Monsoon Experiment (SCSMEX) was an international experiment
designed to understand the key physical
processes for the onset, maintenance and variability of the Southeast Asian
monsoon. The field phase of SCSMEX was held from 1 May to 30 June 1998 during
which two Intensive Observing Periods (IOPs) were conducted. During these
IOPs extensive meteorological and
oceanographic observations were taken over the South China Sea.
An integral part of observational network during the IOPs included:
two research vessels (Shiyan 3 located near 20N, 117E
and Kexue 1 near 6N, 110E), which took high resolution vertical soundings of
the atmosphere and detailed surface measurements, and
a network of two Doppler radars in the
northern South China Sea.
Colorado State University participated in the SCSMEX field program
principally through the collection of atmospheric sounding data
(PI: Prof. Richard H. Johnson, CSU) and
surface data collected on the ships (PI: Dr. David Parsons, NCAR ATD).
Our future work will be to provide a research quality atmospheric
gridded dataset over the SCMSEX domain for May and June 1998.
We caution that the gridded data are PRELIMINARY, having been subjected to
only minimal quality control. Work is continuing on a second version with
more extensive quality control, higher time resolution and other
improvements. However, even further improvements are anticipated in 1999
and beyond in connection with ongoing sounding data collection activities
by the Beijing data center, UCAR, and the GAME community. as well as
proposed quality control efforts by UCAR.
To keep abreast of analyses updates, we encourage users
to register your use of the datasets with us (see contact person
at bottom of this page).
